Minutes of the August 31, 2010 meeting

Present: Ken Hulka (director), Melanie Lyonnais (commissioner), Sue Keglovitz (commissioner), Jack Curtis (commissioner), Cheryl Clarke (commissioner), Chad Parker (commissioner)

Absent:

Also Present: Dale Lee (Fruitport Youth Club), Ross Spike (Beach Baseball)

Cheryl called the meeting to order.

The Board received Departmental Revenues & Expenditures for Fruitport Charter Township period ended 7/31/10 for Fund 208 Park Recreation Fund and Disbursement Reports for 6/1/10-6/30/10, 7/1/10-7/30/10 and 8/1/10-8/30/10.

Wesco rented Pine Park for $125 for a 1-day softball tournament for their staff.

The water pump went out at Pine Park.  We are waiting for the cost for replacement.

Ken was given a preliminary update on the grant application showing we were given 230 of 430 points.  The deadline to make changes is 10/8/10.  We lost 10 points for not having signs at Sheringer Park and that the gate was locked (gate was not actually locked, but appeared to be).  Pat Cornelisse will contact Ken to discuss soon.

Ken received a quote from Paul Schultz of approximately $8200 to excavate, add top soil and seed south end of the park.  This area can be used for practice and parking.  Fencing and a gate will also need to be installed.  Sue made a motion to authorize this project contingent of Fruitport Youth Club splitting costs.  Cheryl seconded the motion.  All in favor.

Dale, on behalf of Fruitport Youth Club, would like to add a t-ball field at Farr Park.  Fruitport Youth Club would like to approach businesses for donations and a naming opportunity.  The location for the field would be east of the playground between fields 1 & 2.  The Board has given Dale permission to proceed in donation requests.

Ross, on behalf of Beach Baseball, would also like to have a t-ball field at Pine Park as previously discussed.  They are also looking for donors.  The Board needs to approve a space to move forward with this project.  The Board is concerned with the township having a need for two t-ball fields.  A special meeting will be held Wednesday, September 1st @ 8pm between Ross, Ken, Jack and Chad to measure and determine if there is a current appropriate space for this field.

Fruitport Youth Club has purchased 4,000 feet of fence covers.  Fruitport Youth Club will wait until spring to install to allow for the fencing to be painted first.  Cameras have been installed at Farr Park to deter unwanted activity.

Fruitport Youth Club would like to add to the current press box at Farr Park for storage.  The idea would be to extend the existing press box 10 additional feet towards the football field.

Beach Baseball would like to renovate the infields at Pine Park and replace foul poles.  The idea would be to scrape the grass, level mounds and level infields or have all dirt infields.  Ken advises not scraping the grass as it would be very difficult to have grass again.  It was approved to replace the foul poles if cement is used below ground level only.

Next meeting set for Tuesday, September 28th, 2010 at 6pm at the Township Hall.
